Brian Elliott Jankanish is an honest-to-goodness Seattle-born native, though he has tribal membership with the Tlingit-Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska, and additionally is of Navajo descent.
Growing up in North Seattle, he began violin at age 6, and viola at age 12. In addition to a whole host of chamber programs and ensembles, he was a member of the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestras (SYSO) for 9 seasons, a student at the Seattle Conservatory, and attended Garfield High School, during the Tsutakawa years.
Brian's musical life&career has generously taken him all over the world. From schooling in Baltimore and the UK, to courses in France, multiple ambassadorial tours across China and Japan, as well as festivals in The Netherlands, Wales, Aspen, Philadelphia, Toronto, Santa Barbara, and Boca Raton. It was all music all the time for Brian as a young lad.
He completed his higher education and began his professional career at The Royal College of Music in London, England, before finally returning home to the PNW for good. He and his husband Michael live in North Seattle with their lovely black cat Lulu, and their American Kennel Club Champion Glen of Imaal Terrier, Oran, and his cousin (future AKC Champion) Kiwi.
His training includes studies with Susie Meszaros, Helen Callus, Susan Gulkis Assadi, Kimberly Fisher, and Paul Silverthorne for a life-changing summer =)
Brian can be seen performing all over the Seattle area, including performances with Chamber, Orchestral and Pit ensembles year round in addition to his recital & solo work. These include The 5th Ave Theater, Seattle Metropolitan Chamber Orchestra, Puget Sound Concert Opera, Lake Washington Symphony Orchestra, Chelan BachFest every summer, and both Yakima Symphony and NW Sinfonietta. A general list of upcoming performances can be found on the Performances page.
Brian has been a coach with SYSO organization for years, working with violinists and violists in the Seattle, Lake Washington, and Edmonds school districts.
